Crocheting: Three months in

This month I’ve accumulated too many skeins of yarn, learned a few new stitches, and wrapped up the presents I made for my mom and sisters for Christmas. I’m also almost done with a scarf for my grandma and still need to make another infinity scarf, fingerless gloves, and a wrap for gifts. I’ll post them next month after everyone has opened them.

I made my first more intimidating items: fingerless gloves. I was totally good making blankets and scarves, but making things “in the round” was intimidating. The first pair took me hours upon hours to do for myself. Then I made another pair and realized one was well over an inch taller than the other. They were supposed to be for my sister, but I couldn’t give them to her, so I tried again, this time making gloves for Olivia. I made another (better) pair for my sister, and then a pair for Chris. I just completed a pair for a friend’s daughter and they took me less than two hours to do. I made a coffee mug cozy out of this glittery yarn which looks amazing, but I didn’t take into account the amount of stretch. Same with the 5 ear warmers I’ve made since then. The last set was matching ones for Olivia and me, and they’re much better. Though I fear the ear warmer I sent to my friend’s daughter is going to be too big.

I also finally made the flower purse for Olivia that was the “challenging” project in the kids crochet set I had originally bought to learn from. It’s, um, a bit rough, but she loves it.

I made a little pouch to hold my stitch markers, but I want to make more to hold other things.

Below is the first pair of gloves I made for myself. Ironically I’ve since lost them. But Olivia was digging them so much, that I let her pick out a rainbow yarn for her own pair.

  • I also made a phone case for Chris
  • I’m slowly working on a shawl with really thin yarn and it’s been a slow annoying process. I had a bunch of thin yarn I ordered when I first started crocheting and was new (read: an idiot) and didn’t understand there are different sizes of yarn. I’m now the proud owner of like 50 little skeins of tiny cotton yarn. I’m going to plow through this shawl because I put a lot into it so far, but I’m leaving the rest of those yarn balls for some washcloths in the future.
  • I have an infinity scarf I’m nearing completion with using hand-dyed yarn. It’s cotton and I didn’t realize until after I bought it that cotton isn’t the easiest to work with.

  • I started a scrap blanket (using all the leftover and random bits of yarn I’ve accumulated. It was going to be a scarf, but I realized this would get more use as an afghan.
  • I also made a dishcloth and washcloth for my other sister as a housewarming gift.

And finally, I finished my afghan I started not long into learning how to crochet. It still needs a border, but I’m finally done with it, and it’s so cozy.

I love this! Over winter I started knitting and crocheting – I used to do it as a kid, and it was lovely to find that the muscle memory was still there. A friend crocheted a beautiful blanket that inspired me – I got the pattern from her. I haven’t finished that, but I’ve done a whole lot of other things. It’s so fun to go shopping for wool and figuring out what to make. I’m loving being able to gift my creations too.

My grandma knitted and my other grandma crocheted. I never learned from either of them because I didn’t have a ton of interest in it. I wish I would have. It would have been interested to learn crochet from my grandma versus the YouTube videos I do now to see how I would have learned differently. It’s definitely fun to shop for the wool. I now have more than I know what to do with! 🙂 I would love to see this blanket!

Wow, I’m so impressed! Your afgan is fabulous, I love the colors. My ears always get so cold in the fall and spring, so you may have just motivated me to learn this for myself so I can try to make my own ear warmers!

Thank you! It seemed like a long time coming and it’s still not quite complete.
