For Mother’s Day this year, I found myself with three kids and I still don’t know how that happened.
We started out with breakfast in bed, per our usual tradition, only now there were two kids in my bed eating including a toddler that doesn’t sit still ever. So I wouldn’t necessarily call it a relaxing morning by any means, but it was sweet.
At least I’ll look back on this moment as sweet. I do know I’m not letting all three kids in this bed when Austin gets older, so eventually I’ll be able to justify to Olivia that Mom is going to have breakfast in bed alone. But until that day comes, I get kids in my bed dropping crumbs.
Later that morning, we walked up to the park so the kids could play and then we walked back to play outside in the driveway.
At least Chris played with the girls and I sat in a chair snuggling a baby.
They gave me the presents they made in school later that afternoon. It was so sweet. I ended up crying over the card Chris got me because the girls each wrote a message in there and I was finding myself wanting to burst into tears, but couldn’t because then Olivia would be asking me for the next three months, “Mom, remember when we gave you that card and it made you cry? Mom, why did you cry so much?”
But their presents were so sweet. Homemade gifts truly are the best.
That night, we made homemade macaroni and cheese for dinner, the first meal I made myself since giving birth and it was delicious. We took photos outside (after I almost forgot) and Olivia was not happy with me because she wanted to take the picture in front of a particular tree and I wanted to take it in front of the fence and hence her standoffish expression on her face in the photo combined with her standing just a bit too far from me to appear natural.
She later apologized when I asked her if she wanted to come antiquing with me that afternoon. Normally, I would see my mom at least on Mother’s Day, but the family was gathering that evening and we just decided to skip the event this year due to a teeny baby that’s almost three weeks old.
I did see my mom that past Friday to give her a gift and card so I still got to celebrate her.
All in all, it was a good day. I have my three kids I can’t manage, I got to go antique shopping, and I had mac n cheese. Life is pretty good.
